Arkport gets its name from the "arks" that were used to transport goods down the Canisteo River to Baltimore. These large, flat-bottomed boats were built from local timber and were used to transport a variety of goods, including crops, livestock, and potash. The arks were a vital part of Arkport's economy until the Erie Canal was completed in 1825, which provided a more efficient way to transport goods.
